Is It Safe To Use Your Credit Card On-Line?

The simple answer is YES! It is not only safe, using your
credit card is the safest and only way you should buy anything
on-line. It's actually safer to buy on-line with your credit card
than to use your credit card almost anywhere else.

More than ninety percent of all sales on the Internet are
processed using credit cards.

Internet credit card fraud today is big; it costs merchants
and credit card companies billions each year. As a consumer,
using your credit card on-line offers you special protections not
available with any other payment method.

Who Pays for Your Protection?

When you buy using a credit card, merchants pay a percentage
of their total transaction to the merchant's account provider.
Typical discount rates range from 2.5% to 5%, depending the type
of business and other factors. Some of the funds and a
per-transaction fee are used to pay for your protection, but it's
the merchant that pay for credit card fraud, not the customer.

When you use a check or a fake credit card or debit card
that draws funds from your checking account these protections
don't apply. Always use a real credit card and not a debit card
on-line.

Credit card companies are on the side of the consumer, they
want you to use your credit card because they earn a percentage
of every sale from the merchant. Fraud costs are mostly charged
to the merchant.

1) If you are a victim of any kind of fraud you can have the
charge removed.
2) If your product is not delivered you can have the charge
removed.
3) If the quality wasn't as represented, you can have the
charge removed.
4) In most cases if you just want a refund for any reason
you can get it without any hassles if you buy with your credit
card.
5) If you have trouble getting a refund for any reason you
can dispute the purchase with your credit card company and have
the charge removed.

Buying Off-line

When you buy off-line at a restaurant, mall or department
store, your purchase is actually much less secured than it is
on-line.

Off-line there is a paper trail where many people have
potential access to your information. Anyone anywhere along the
way can get access to your credit card information or even to
your entire identity.

Retail transactions are verified via telephone lines where
hackers can get access to your information. Always ask to get
your carbon returned every time your card is swiped so your
information is not left available to the staff or end up in the
garbage where identify thieves find it for identity theft.

Your personal information is only as safe as the computer
system where your account information is stored. Most retail
stores today use wireless computer networks to store your
information. Wireless computer hackers compromise hundreds of
thousands of accounts on a regular basis selling account
information to crooks.

Retailers may keep your information on file for future sales
without your permission, where anyone with access can compromise
it. In addition, many merchants will sell your personal
information without your permission to third parties.

Buying On-Line

When you purchase on-line, things are almost always much
more secure.

Assuming you only enter your credit card information on
secure servers your information is encrypted. A secure server URL
address starts with the prefix https not the normal http that
non-secure pages use the added "s" stands for secure. Your
browser should also show a locked padlock in the status bar if
you are on a secure server.

Your information is encrypted using 64 bit encryption
technology. This encryption is 100% safe and no-one has figured
out how to break it. In almost all cases your merchant doesn't
have access to your credit card number or card verification
number. They will have access to your name, address, phone
number, and authorization number for your purchase, just in case
they need to contact you about the sale or generate a credit or
refund later.

The Electronic Sales Process

1) Your encrypted credit card information goes directly to a
third party transaction payment gateway server where it remains
encrypted from human eyes. When you use your credit card, you
submit an electronic request to a third party processing network
for "authorization to capture funds" from your credit card
account in the amount of the purchase.

2) The processing network receives your electronic request in
real time. It determines if your account is valid and if the
funds are available. If they are, the processing network returns
an electronic response code. This response is called an
"authorization code"; it is the guaranteed authorization required
to capture the funds. Typically, this code is a six-digit number.
The transaction and its associated authorization are stored in a
"batch", where other transactions for that day reside. Only the
merchant and the processor have access to the authorization code
and the transaction number for the sale but neither will have
access to your credit card number.

3) The merchant's transaction gateway server sends you and the
merchant a transaction receipt via email. As far as you are
concerned, the transaction is complete. One more step required
for the merchant to complete the transaction.

4) At the end of the business day (usually), a final request is
submitted to the processing network to go ahead and "capture the
funds" that you obtained authorizations for during the course of
business that day. This is called "settlement". Any charge can be
voided before settlement occurs. This gives a merchant a second
chance to examine all transactions to see if everything looks OK.
This step is important because the merchant is ultimately
responsible for any fraudulent sales.

5) Within 48 to 72 hours (usually), the funds associated with the
batch are deposited electronically into the merchant's business
bank account. Typically, the discount rate your merchant pays are
deducted from the deposit before it transferred to the merchant's
bank account.

Real Time Credit Card Processing

If you intend to sell anything on-line you must be able to
accept credit cards; credit cards are the currency of the
Internet. Secure real time credit card processing removes the
barriers that might prevent you from doing business on the net.

A real time credit card processing system is a transaction
processing system that functions as a payment service using a
secure transaction server on the Internet. Merchants with a
merchant account can use the system to submit, authorize,
capture, and settle credit card or eCheck transactions on-line
without the need for a separate transaction terminal, device or

How to Avoid Problems

Most Internet merchants are honest and deliver exactly what
you pay for. If they didn't they would lose their merchant
account. Your credit card company protects you from on-line
fraud. If you have a problem with a merchant you can't resolve on
your own, call the number on the back of your credit card to get
help or to dispute the sale.

The number one way your personal information is compromised
on-line is when you give it to someone who shouldn't have it in
the first place. Almost 100% of fraud can be avoided simply by
not buying from strangers via email. NEVER buy anything from
spammers, NEVER, no matter how good the deal seems.

The porn industry is another way people get taken. They
often collect credit card info in order to sell it to fraudsters.

A deal that sounds too good to be true or appeals to greed
are another way scammers get access your credit card information.
When someone tells you to keep their offer in confidence, assume
there is a reason. You should know you can't buy legitimate
products for 10% to 20% of the normal price.

Just use common sense. You haven't been specially selected
for anything. You haven't won $1,000,000 in a contest you don't
even remember entering, and no-one is going to send you millions
of dollars to help them get their money out of Nigeria or some
other country.

A legitimate business will never ask you to provide your
personal information via non-secure email.

Scammers often print one link on the email but when you
click, it may redirect you to another one. Any time you log onto
any site to provide personal credit card or banking information
type the secure URL address into your browser. Look at the
address you entered, if you are not 100% sure call the company
directly to confirm. At least validate the owner of the domain in
question using a DNS search tool like the following

Don't be afraid of buying on-line, it's still the safest way
to buy anything, and it's usually cheaper than buying anywhere
else. Even with the cost of shipping, often you can buy cheaper
and safer on-line, even from the biggest retailers without even
leaving home.

Six Questions When Choosing a Affiliate Program

I have been working on-line over ten years now and it's is
almost as confusing now as it was when I started. I have
developed a sort of 6th sense. Today I want to tell you how I
evaluate affiliate programs and income opportunities.

"I look at what most of the others are doing and then I do
something a little different".

I have learned that whenever I consider a new business
opportunity that; "it's what they don't tell you that makes the
difference". If it's a great selling product they probably offer
small commissions. When it's a harder to sell product they will
focus on selling you their compensation plan. It's difficult if
not impossible to properly evaluate any affiliate product or
service based solely on published information

I have joined a lot of affiliate programs and some of them
are money makers and some are not. What I found was that most
affiliates are earning little or nothing. This is because most
people don't like the product well enough to buy it and become an
expert.

With enough experience you will eventually learn the right
questions on your own. I hope I can save you some time and effort
by sharing the following questions.

If I can't determine the answers quickly enough I suspect
there are other important considerations that they are also not
telling me.

1) How Much Retail Commission Can I Make?

I want to know how much as a percentage of gross sales are
reserved for a retail commission. The formula I like best as an
affiliate is a 50/50 split on the first level. I think a 50/50
split is fair because with a good commission the affiliate can
afford to spend more time and money marketing the product.

Most affiliate programs try to get as keep as much profit as
possible out of every sale. I believe that is one reason why
more than 90% of all affiliates don't earn enough income and
quit. If you are only making 10% how much time and money would
you spend to market someone else's product?

2) Is Some Or All The Income Residual

In the best case scenario, you can you sell the same product
over and over with no additional effort and earn still a
commission on every sale. Products with resale rights, services,
and consumable products are examples.

Multi-level marketers have understood residual income from
the beginning. Amway started up 30 plus years ago selling soap.
Soap is something everyone buys over their whole lifetime. Once
you sell someone soap they will continue to purchase from you as
long as the price is right and you make it easy for them to buy.
Many on-line businesses are now offering re-billing features.

3) Do I Have To Buy The Product Or Service In Order To Sell It?

You earn in proportion to what you invest. If it were too
easy to sell they wouldn't be willing to pay you to sell it.
That's why it's important to choose products where you know what
you bringing to the table. If you have little or no interest in
the product or service you won't be successful, keep shopping
products & opportunities until you find a product that is worth
buying yourself.

Most of the real moneymakers require that you become a
customer before they will allow you to re-sell their products.
This policy makes sense for several reasons.

a. If it's not worth buying - it's not worth selling
b. If you understand the product well you can sell it much
better
c. If you are required to be a customer to become a reseller
there will be a lot less other re-sellers to earn a
bigger share of the total market.
d. If the product comes with a learning curve it's actually even
better because you can sell consulting or support services.

4 ) How Much Effort Is Required To Earn The First $300?

You can use your own number. I use $300 because if it's not
reasonable to earn $300 in a month it most likely won't generate
enough income for the effort. Your number may be different.

For example if 30 sales earned $300. That's one sale a day,
30 sales are a lot for the average Internet marketer for one
month. If I can't earn $300 in first level sales commissions
the product should offer a residual income element.

It's absolutely astounding to me how many business
opportunities don't give you enough information to answer that
one simple question. "How much do I need to sell to earn $300"?

You Want To Determine Three Things

a. How much profit you are earning per sale
b. How much effort in time and money it takes to produce the
average sales prospect
c. Find your lead to sale conversion in a percentage.

The industry average might be only one or two percent
conversion from prospect to customer. I have been able to
average five percent average after a lot of fine-tuning and
highly targeted marketing.

As I have mentioned before using my follow-up system two of
each ten requests for information result in sales. While that
may not seem to be a lot it's over 400% better than I was used to
earning and almost 8 times the industry average.

5 ) Can I Cross-Market Off-Line?

Most Internet marketers disregard a profitable source of
income. Targeted marketing off-line is usually as profitable as
on-line marketing. Off-line marketing often gets neglected
because of the myth that it's easy to earn a fortune almost
overnight on-line.

6 ) How Many Income Levels Does The Opportunity Offer?

This one may surprise you.

Traditional multi-level marketing doesn't usually offer
enough income to be profitable to anyone except the business
offering the opportunity. This is because it gets divided so
many ways. If the product costs one hundred dollars and fifty
dollars is profit. You could earn the whole fifty dollars with a
single level affiliate program.

If the program is two levels as many affiliate programs are
today. Instead of earning the whole fifty dollars profit you
might earn thirty dollars or less. The other twenty dollars
profit goes to your up-line for doing nothing, sounds good? In
reality the first level commission of thirty dollars is all you
will usually see.

The problem with multi-levels is that the opportunity pays
to little retail to be worth your time and effort. Even a great
product won't sell if it's over-priced. At the same time I think
it's unreasonable to expect others to do work if you are not
setting the example by selling retail product.

Another all to common outcome is that your marketing
becomes more focused on finding more resellers in the hope that
they will do what you are no longer focused on doing, selling
retail product.

In Conclusion

Look for products in your niche that you want to use
yourself to re-sell. Look for a high percentage of profit on the
first level. Choose products and services that are consumable so
you can sell it over and over. Understand the commission
structure and learn exactly what you must do to reach your first
income goal. Last but not least don't become a recruit. Market
on and off-line and earn the biggest commissions on your own
retail sales. Most of all don't expect others to do all the work
for you.

A Package Deal

Rather than forcing people to identify their exact needs
value added packages of related products provide a combination of
options at a set price,

No matter what product or service you are selling it will
sell better and earn you more profit if you offer it in a package
of some kind. If you already have a unique product or service you
can easily more than double your total profit simply by including
a few low cost value added bonuses along with your product.

Buyers Prefer Packages

Packages have become the preferred way to purchase almost
anything today. You see package deals on everything, from fast
food to car repair.

Package deals often offer discounted prices; in most cases
the package price is much lower than the cost of the individual
products if purchased separately.

Often we don't know in advance what our needs are. A package
deal offers a set price and removes insecurity about what the
final price will be.

I recently purchased a package deal to have my car's brakes
overhauled. The cost might have been more than the least I could
have paid, but with the package deal I didn't have to be
concerned about what needed to be done, I was comfortable leaving
everything up to the experts.

Packages are better for merchants because packages are
easier to sell than individual products and result in a more
profitable, higher dollar volume per sale.

Package as Sales Tool

Packages may include free inspections or research into your
future needs. You may not have the experience to identify these
problems or needs on your own.

Including at least one product or service that is unique in
the marketplace can often sell the entire package, sometimes for
a lot more than your unique product or service on its own.

In a Nutshell Packages are:
- Easier to Sell
- Higher Profit
- Higher Dollar Sales
- Higher Perceived Value

The Internet's best selling products

The Internet was founded out of an identified need to share
information. Information products are almost 100% profit and are
the perfect products to market on-line. Often Information
products can be delivered instantly without the buyer even
leaving home.

Since 1983 I have developed and sold information products,
but since1996 when I began selling Information on-line my
business has really taken off.

Before the Internet I paid out most of my profits in
printing and advertising. I was forced to sell through
distributors, who sold to retailers, and everything had to be
paid for, produced and shipped months ahead of making sales. I
was lucky to make 20% net profit on my own products.

I developed a computer program entitled "Be Your Own Coach"
in the early 1980s. This was a software program that helped
joggers develop a custom program to meet their fitness needs. It
took 6 years to develop, Even as the originator of the product I
was paid dead last. I had to pay programmers and printers,
distributors and retailers in full before I earned any profit.

I obtained national distribution, it was the number one
selling software program of its kind in the marketplace, yet I
earned very little. The software company, distributors and
retailers earned over 80% and almost all the costs came out of my
20%.

On the surface my first successful product failed, yet I
earned valuable experience I wouldn't have had, and it paid off
later.

Free Enterprise

I honestly feel that anyone with enough desire and the
willingness to learn can earn a good income working on-line. It's
possible because the operation costs can be so low.

Without the $2000 a month lease an online business can be
profitable from the beginning with very little actual out-of
pocket investment. On the downside, learning marketing requires
time and effort.

Growing a business from the ground up may not be as easy as
others have told you. Like learning any job, a business requires
specific skills that must be developed over time. If it was as
easy as they say, everyone would be successful without any
effort.

We are accustomed to being paid a wage for the work we do,
but starting a business is more like launching a rocket, most of
the learning and work required must be invested up front before
we ever get it off the ground.

The first sale is the hardest, that's why people frame that
first dollar. After you get your business off the ground it gets
easier and more profitable over time.

Make Your own Package

Ultimately the best product or service you can sell on-line
is one you create yourself and have complete control over. Start

Outside Your Comfort Zone

Every year that goes by it gets both easier and harder to
make money on the Internet. It gets easier, as more resources and
knowledge become available and it gets harder, as more and more
people enter the marketplace selling the same or similar
products.

Success is all about having a dream, and then actualizing it
in the real world. It's easy to build a dream, but you must
follow up with action to turn it into reality.

Creation Is A Two Part Task

To create anything in reality, we must first create it in
mind. We live in a physical world - we see and touch things. Yet,
reality exists first in mind. In order to ACHIEVE, first we must
CONCEIVE. Martin Luther King first said "I have a dream," then he
went out into the world to make his dream a reality.

Get Outside Of Your Comfort Zone

I used to be a long distance runner. A running friend of
mine, Steve Prefontane, set several long distance track records
over twenty years ago. Some of them have never been bettered.

I asked him for the secret of his success. I asked how he
seemed able to win almost every race he entered.

He told me he did not believe in talent - he believed in
effort and in commitment.

He said, "If you are not willing to go beyond yourself, you
will eventually stop yourself; you'll stop improving. The very
nature of a 'Personal Best' is going where you have never been
before." He went on, "I win because I am want to win more than
anyone else, and I am willing to work harder than anyone else in
the race, I'll pay whatever it takes."

Enlightenment Doesn't Care How We Get There

We need to be willing to go outside our personal comfort
zone in order to learn the things that are keeping us from
achieving success. We must be willing to do what we have never
done before to succeed. By definition, it's always uncomfortable
to go beyond your comfort zone.

Be Prepared To Be Uncomfortable

It is much easier to learn new things if we have prepared in
advance. Most people put off learning anything new at the point
where it starts to feel uncomfortable. The important work STARTS
as soon as it gets uncomfortable. That's where the REAL
accomplishment begins.

So prepare yourself to be uncomfortable. Start your learning
curve early in the day while you are still alert & fresh. Resign
yourself to the notion that you will not quit when the going gets
rough.

In distance running, the uncomfortable work is done gently -
pushing your personal limits a little at a time, day after day,
just a little bit at a time.

Challenging work takes a toll, and recovery is as important
as the work itself. Breakthroughs usually occur soon after we
take a step back to recover. When we step back, it's easier to
see things more clearly. God made the world is 7 days - the
seventh day in creation is the day of rest. The seventh day is
also the day of fulfillment.

Stretch the Limits

We are all capable of so much more than we think we are. But
if we are not willing to push ourselves outside our comfort zone,
we will never discover our ultimate capabilities.

When we desire to accomplish something is sufficiently
strong, we attract whatever we need for success. We must be
willing to travel a less comfortable path in order to achieve our
goals.

Getting Free Of The Nine-To-Five

Most of us still work at a job. Think about why you work for
someone else. The boss is the boss because he did his homework.
Some of the work was new and uncomfortable, but he did not let it
stop him. He pushed beyond his comfort zone. He made it, and so
can you.

His dream attracted the unique lessons he needed to learn.
Your boss had to be willing to be uncomfortable long enough to
push through. Most importantly, he did the bulk of the work
BEFORE he made a dime. In fact, he probably invested his life
savings in his business.

Develop a Franchise Mentality

Look at a typical franchise operation. People buy a
franchise to avoid repeating someone else's uncomfortable
groundwork. The franchise supplies a proven marketing system, and
you usually supply most or all of your life savings.

Most franchises succeed precisely because people invest so
much in them. They put themselves into a position where they
can't afford to fail. On the downside, you never totally own a
franchise. Usually the franchiser wants and deserves to keep part
of the action in the form of residual income.

Now It's Easier Than Ever

The Internet has made it much easier to turn a dream into
reality. Affiliate Programs work a lot like a franchise operation
but without the high cost.

Selling products produced by others is more comfortable
online. In most cases, you don't even have to buy the product to
sell it. In addition, most Affiliate Programs are free to join.
You can create your own affiliate program to recruit others to
sell your products.

Start with your passion

We develop special expertise in areas in which we have a
strong personal interest. Information is the engine that
motivates the Internet. Developing your passion is the key to
success. Start with your passion and what you already know, and
then develop your own product.

Summing Up

In order to be successful we must learn to treat our
business like a business - not a hobby.

Contrary to the hype you read everywhere, it's not easy to
be successful in any business. If it was easy, anyone could do
it, and everyone would be successful.

A Basic Strategy for Free Traffic

Every day I get email from people who already have a website
but aren't selling enough. They want to know what to do get more
buyers to their website.

One top ten listing in a single major search engine can give
you more free traffic than a costly keyword advertising program,
but it requires a little planning. If you are just getting
started or starting over, now is the time to develop your basic
traffic strategy. There are a few basics almost every website
should incorporate in order to get free traffic from the search
engines.

I would recommend that you adapt a long term approach to
getting free traffic. Get started doing the things you can do for
yourself free and if you don't know how to do something take the
time now to learn how to do it on your own.

Establish Your Business Internet Identity

The very first thing you do should do is invest in your own
domain name. If you don't start here you will be forced to redo
all your website promotional work every time you change web
hosting provider. A domain name will give your website an
address that won't change; this is a must if you are serious
about doing business on-line.

There are several good low cost companies that can register
your domain name. I use GoDaddy.com. The cost is less than ten
dollars a year and it's simply a must.

Most hosting companies can register your domain name as part
of their startup service. When registering your domain name, your
hosting company will appear as your technical and/or
administrative contact. Make sure that your domain is registered
to YOU and not to the hosting company. This is important, because

Find a Good Hosting Service

Don't make the same mistake I made when choosing a hosting
company. Free and low cost hosting companies are great for your
personal web pages but not for business. The following URL will
explain what to look for in a hosting service. Changing hosting
companies later can amount to much more work than you expect so
in short, start out with a full service hosting service you can
stay with.

bit higher priced than the budget hosts. It's best to invest in
a host that will answer your questions because you will need more
support in the beginning.

Develop a Professional Website

If you don't already have a professional looking website I
would advise you to have your initial website designed
professionally. If funds are low consider spending a week
learning the basics of HTML and starting with a professional
pre-designed template.

There are many issues involved in developing your first
website. If you develop the content ahead of time it's possible
to purchase a custom website template without spending a lot of
money.

It costs a lot to have your webpage copy written
professionally so invest the time learning how to write it
yourself or have it written or edited professionally before you
even start to design your website. Plan what you want to
communicate on each page and how many pages you will need.
Prepare as much of the content as possible yourself.

From the start, plan it so each important page of your
website will appear to the search engines as an entire website,
and you want your visitors to have access to all your important
pages from each of your main pages. This strategy gives you more
front doors to attract visitors via the search engines.

Do You Have Meta Tags on Your Pages

Develop Meta Tags even before you develop your website, it's
that important because the Meta Tags are the only information
your potential visitors will see in the search results when they
are searching for your site

Meta Tags consist of code that is read and indexed by the
major search engines. Most web page design software doesn't
generate the code automatically for you, and most don't explain
the concept very well in their documentation.

You can save a lot of money here because this in essence
what the Internet Insiders do when they offer to sell you a top
listing.

Pay special attention to the selection of keyword phrases.
You should actually test your keywords in the biggest search
engines first. When you visit the top sites listed, select "VIEW
PAGE SOURCE" from your browser, you can see the actual Meta Tags
and keywords that resulted in the top placements. It's worth
the time to optimize your Meta Tags for each of the biggest
search engines in this manner. Write and optimize Meta Tags for
each of your important pages.

Nouns often make the best keywords. It is unlikely you will
be found using general keywords like business, or software.
Instead develop your keyword list using keyword phrases; they are
more specific and therefore more powerful. Stay away from
keywords that are too general like "free", or "software", if you
are offering free software on your website use "free software" in
combination for a higher ranking.

If you don't bother to prepare Meta Tags for your pages the
search engines will index the first words found, this usually
isn't the best choice.

Submit Your Site to the Search Engines

Don't waste your money on "pay for submission" services
promising top listings. Most can't deliver. If you can learn how
to write Meta Tags you can do fine on your own.

Before you actually submit your site to the search engines,
learn the basics of how search engines rank your pages in the

Make sure that the each page's content is designed to stand
on its own, as if it was a complete website. Once you have the
basic submission work finished, explore the directories that
specialize in niche sites like your own. Because of the large

Promotion and Submission Secrets

The Internet is growing so fast that by the time I finish
this article some information will have become outdated. In 2005
the Internet was growing at an average rate of over one million
new users a month, it is expected to at least double that in
2006.

There are about 400,000 new web pages going up on the
Internet every day. Finding one single web page can be like
finding a needle in a haystack of needles.

Design Your Page for Easy Navigation

Thoroughly plan your website navigation. Design it so that
each major page is linked to all other important pages. Each
important page should also stand on its own.

If you try to bring in all your visitors through one main
page you are limiting your potential success by a huge amount.
Offer several front doors to enter your website. You can then
submit each major page separately using separate keywords,
titles, descriptions, and Meta Code for each page.

The Internet Was Developed For Free Information Exchange

One of the most powerful things you can do to bring in
visitors is to offer them some of your valuable information.
People still go on the Internet to find information about
something. Develop your niche by offering free information.

Develop Your Own Mailing List

Email is still the cheapest and most powerful marketing tool
out there. It's important to network and develop relationships
with your visitors; studies show that it may take up to seven
visits before you make a single sale, so give your visitors a
reason to return. Start a newsletter and email updates. Learn
how often to contact your visitors so that they will want to
receive your updates. Don't SPAM it won't work.

Develop Your Own Marketing Strategy

There's no way that your page will come up in the top ten
for every search done for every keyword. This is impossible.

Learn how to focus your web page down so that you are able
to define its purpose in one or two specific words. Internet
marketing is a "pull" medium, the visitor must be "pulled" to you
site because of something they want that you have to offer. This
is usually information or a service or product.

So to be successful you need to "pull" or attract people
into visiting your web site by using the keywords your perfect
customer would type in a search engine if he was looking for the
information or product or service you offer. Most good keywords
are nouns, they describe a person place or thing, the more
specific your keywords are the more targeted your submission will
be to your niche market.

Learn To Network

Be co-operative not competitive, you'll go a lot further on
the Internet.
Contact other related web sites and exchange links or banners and
information with them.

In the off-line business world many businesses band together
forming malls where all businesses gain an advantage of more foot
traffic. Internet malls are not as useful in bringing in traffic
but exchanging links with related websites, joining related Web
Rings, and Banner Exchanges can all impact on your bottom line.

Cross referrals are also a powerful marketing tool, Since
you can't be an expert in everything try to become an information
source, help people find what they are looking for, Just having
answers and being willing to share brings them back over & over.

Market To Your Own Customers First

Many businesses forget this technique but it's one of the
best. The easiest sale to make will always be to an existing
satisfied customer. Stay in contact and follow up with your
customers.

Your Proper Selection of Keywords

This is the most important step in a web site design. If
you developed the greatest web site for the best product or
service and didn't develop your keyword strategy you will not get
many visitors.

Start by developing a list of the top 40-50 words you can
think of. Next put them in order of importance. Now combine your
keywords into as many 2 or 3 key word combinations as possible.

Last, test your keywords to determine which are your
strongest keywords and keyword combinations. Test your best
keyword combinations with several search engines. You can view
the source for other pages that come up higher than your site in
the listings. Revise your page and re-submit and retest until
you are satisfied.

Use Popular Keywords But Only In Power Combinations

Always use keyword combinations when selecting keywords.
You may have a great keyword but if everyone else is also using
it you may still be too far down in the listings to get found.
Develop keyword combinations with your best keywords. You can
combine your best keywords with popular keywords.

Use Keywords in Your Title

Your page title is indexed by all the important search
engines. Make absolutely sure that you place your best keywords
in your title. Use your best keyword as the first word of your
title, and then repeat it again later in the title if possible.

Use your best keywords over again in your description and
again in your keyword list. Use as few words as possible in your
title so that each keyword is a bigger percentage of the title.

Start the Title with "A" Or with a Number

Several search engines including YAHOO still print the
search results in alphabetical or numerical order. Actually "A"
isn't first. Starting your title with a space will score higher
than an "A" and ! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , - / are all higher than
an "A". If reasonable try to start your title with a number or a
symbol.

Change Your Title, Description & Keywords and Re-Submit Often.

When you change your web page also change your page title
and keywords. Some search engines will automatically update to
your new listing immediately but several will create a second
listing with its own title and description. For a while at least
you may end up with 2 or more search engine listings.

Creative Keywords

You want your title & description to be interesting and
inviting but you can be a little more creative in selection of
your keywords. Using common miss-spellings of common keywords
can sometimes work wonders, especially when combined with popular
keywords. After building your keyword list try some common
misspellings of some of some of your power keywords or keyword
combinations.

Use the Plural Keyword When Possible

If someone searches for "webmaster" and you use webmasters
as your keyword your site will be found since webmaster is part
of webmasters. If you had just used the singular webmaster and
someone types in webmasters plural your site would not be found.
In short use the plural whenever possible.

The Meta Tags

No site is finished without Meta Tags. Meta is HTML code
that you insert into your finished web page. It comes a before
the tag. The Meta Tag is like a mini index of your web
site. Your Meta Tags are found first by the search engines. Most
the bigger search engines can read "Meta Code" and some depend on
finding Meta Tags to index your page correctly. Words contained
in the Meta Tags are given a LOT of keyword weight in the search
engines.

If you repeat your top keywords in your Meta Tags keep the
number of repetitions to 5 or less to avoid having your
submission automatically getting filtered out for keyword
spamming.

Many popular web site design programs still do not make it
easy to create your own Meta Tags. There are two tags that should
be on every page to be indexed properly. The "DESCRIPTION" and
the "KEYWORDS" tags should be added to the HTML code before
uploading any files and submitting any page.

Meta Generator

My favorite free Meta generator tool will write all the Meta
Tag code for you and generate the HTML to paste into your pages.

The act of submitting your web pages to the search engines
can be a time-consuming and never ending struggle without

Fishing On the Net

The Internet is a vast ocean of information; our web pages
are fishing lines each waiting for a fish to bite. The problem is
there are almost as many anglers as there are fish. It's getting
harder all the time to attract visitors.

First Give if You Want To Get

If you intend to sell something on the Internet you must use
some sort of bait. First, you need to attract visitors to your
website. The best way to do this is to offer unique information.
We call this information "CONTENT." People surf the net to find
this content just fish search the waters to find food. To the
fish, information is food - to the fisherman, it's bait.

You can supply this unique information either through your
own expertise or through the expertise of others. Free
information works like bait in the water. After a taste of the
bait, the fish return for dinner.

The first consideration of the angler is what kind of fish
to try to catch. You want to go after a species you have a
reasonable chance of catching. On the Internet this amounts to
researching the market, as opposed to doing market research.

The fish you seek will determine the bait you should use.
On-line it's your information or content that attracts the fish.
Not all fish are attracted to every kind of bait. So the more
specific you can be in determining the bait (content) required,
the greater your chance of catching the kind of fish you want.

Your unique expertise helps define YOUR market and develop
it. I will go into detail about how to do this later. For now
it's enough to understand that 90 percent of your efforts should
go into content development and only about 10 percent into asking
for sales. If you choose your bait correctly, you will actually
be able to select which fish you catch as opposed to accepting
whatever swims into your net.

More Lines in The Water

How many fish can you catch with one line in the water?
Professional anglers put out more lines. The pros use every tool
they can get. Professionals use electronic fish finders to find
whole schools of fish. Your server's logs act like a fish finder.
They tell you where the fish are coming from, where they are
going, and where they are right now. If you want to catch more
fish, first find the school then put more lines in the water.

Having one page on the Internet, you may only pull in 1 - 10
visitors a day. If you have two pages with different titles,
descriptions, and content for the search engines to index, you
may double your visitor count.

The search engines dangle your bait. Your page titles and
description appear in the search engine listings. The title to
your page and the description of it's content are more important
than the content itself. Your page title and description are the
bait. Every angler knows you can't expect to attract fish with
stale or inappropriate bait.

If your offer is interesting enough to attract visitors, you
will have a much better chance of making sales. Since you will be
investing 90% of your efforts in attracting visitors you want to
do everything possible to develop return visitors. If you create
compelling content, your customers will buy from you again and
again with little or no additional effort from you.

You will need to earn return visitors to build sales. Ask
them to bookmark your page. Offer the specific information they
were looking for. And continue developing your content over time.
You will be surprised at how fast your traffic and sales
increase.

Gather the Net

Gradually develop more pages. Almost every link on your site
delivers your visitor to more information or to your order form.

Become a content developer and others will link to your site
driving their visitors to you. They send you visitors because
your content adds value to their website. This is an
often-overlooked marketing strategy. Visitors that value your
content are more likely to purchase your product or service.

Beginning in 2001 the search engines have gradually changed
the way in which they rank pages in order to deliver more
visitors to the most popular, most content-rich websites.

Once you get a good bite, follow up and set the hook, so the
fish doesn't get away. Fishing for deep-sea fish from shore isn't
going to work well; you need to get out on deep water. Imagine
yourself in your customer's shoes. Discover what they want, then
satisfy their needs by providing it.

Follow up with your prospect using several short
content-rich email messages. Prepare your messages from your
targeted ideal customer's point of view. Tell them exactly why
they should buy from you and not someone else.

Don't Scare Them Off

Professional anglers don't make a move that might scare away
a potential catch. So don't place banners or links on your pages
that can let your catch slip away. Especially before they have
tasted the bait.

I have never understood why so many entrepreneurs use banner
exchange programs. It seems counter-productive to place a banner
at the top of a page that sends your visitors elsewhere.

Most banner exchange programs will show your banner once on
another related website in exchange for you displaying a banner
twice on yours. You get one chance to catch a visitor, but risk
two you already have. Something is wrong with the math.

Consider each off-site link carefully. If you send a visitor
away, there must be an added value to you in doing so. Else it is
silly to send people away after working so hard to catch them in
the first place.

You are looking for schools of specific fish. Target your
visitors as tightly as possible. Once they visit, gradually
gather the net. Move them along towards your order form. You can
do this easily if you are providing what they want.

Try Something New

Marketing on the Internet is like trolling for fish. If you
continually try new things and track your results, your catch
will continually grow. If you blindly do the same things over and
over again without monitoring your results properly, your catch
will continue to decrease.

Fishing Can Be a Costly Business

Don't spend too much to earn too little. Even the
professional can waste money on the wrong tackle and equipment.
Often we spend too much on the things that do not matter much and
too little on those that do.

The trick is to track everything you do. It is the only way
to be certain what works and what does not.

Hire a First Rate Guide

If you are serious about your business, it's smart to follow
a professional. In every body of water, there is ONE MOST
experienced angler. They are the mentors to the rest of us. They
already have what we want, and they already know what we want to
know. Only a fool knows everything. No matter who you are or who
you think you are, there is always someone who knows more. If you
want what they have you need to do the things they do.

Bring Along Several Types of Bait

If you offer several kinds of bait you have a better chance
of catching more fish. A good Angler knows which bait will work
best at any given time.

If your site is secure and you offer several ordering
options, more people will purchase from you. Offer all possible
ordering options, including credit cards, checks, fax, email,
snail-mail, telephone, and so forth. The more bait options you
offer the more fish you will catch.

Join a Fleet of Fishermen

Two boats working together can often catch more fish than
two separate boats. When working together; the sum can be greater
than its parts. This is the concept of synergy.a

One of the most powerful approaches to Internet marketing is
to set up strategic partnerships through which you can offer more
products and services without doing all the work yourself.
Associate and Affiliate Programs allow you to earn additional
income selling complementary products through off-site links.

You Don't Get Rich Showing Off Your Trophy

Don't set up your website to showcase things you want to
sell. Trust me. It just doesn't work. Showcase great content,
then your content may lead visitors to the register. (As an
aside, it is usually best to sell more products at a lower price
than to sell a few at a high price. )

Diversify Your Catch Over Time

If you fish the same waters long enough, you will eventually
deplete them. Rotate your target. Don't always fish for bass or
trout. Consider the factors, the weather, the wind, everything.

Change the products you emphasize on your site from time to
time. And frequently change or add some of the content. Add
related products. Keep up to date. Everyone is different, so
within your niche develop several solutions for a single problem.
Briefly explain the benefits of your products or services.
Qualify your leads while you still have them on your site. You
want them to leave only AFTER they order.

If your goal is to make a living from home, diversify your
business into related niche markets. You will find that some of
your products will attract traffic for other products you offer.
Just don't overdo it. Require a clearly defined purpose for each
product, one that fits with the site purpose, and you will do
much better.

If you are to develop your Internet niche, you must
incorporate several strategies. Unfortunately, "If you build it
they will come" only works in the movies. Train yourself. Become
the expert angler. Don't just throw a line in the water and wait.

Prime the Pump

It used to be that when we graduated from high school we
could count on finding a good job with a bright future. If we
worked hard that job could last us for a lifetime. Those times
are long gone.

Today you get hired based on what already know. You keep
your job as long as what know is valuable enough for the company
to earn a profit from your efforts. Your value to the company is
measured in cold hard cash.

Job security has become a thing of the past, and the
average wage in North America has fallen in recent years to
$24,000 a year. Today 8 of every 10 families need two full time
working members.

The trend today is towards more part time or temporary
positions. It's getting all too common for one family to work
several jobs and still earn barely earn enough to get by.

These trends are the reasons why over 25% of families in
North America are involved in a Home Business of some kind. Over
85% of the population of North America indicated an interest in
starting a Home Business. The average full time home business
generates over twice as much yearly income as the average job
averaging over $50,000 a year.

Tanking advantage of the desire to work from home, this year
there have been over 15,000 Multi-Level-Marketing companies start
up. Most never make it through the first payday. Only 30 of
these companies have remained in business for 9 years or longer.
Nine of ten businesses of any type go out of business during the
first ten years.

Why do so many companies go out of business so soon? There
are plenty of reasons but they all boil down to the reality that
most people quit before they make enough income to make it
worthwhile.

It's all sounds depressing if you think about it. Yet we
hear stories about people who get rich in a year, they must be
doing something differently. The common reason most people fail
is they are unwilling to commit long enough to experience
success.

We are taught all our life to look outside of ourselves to fill
our needs. We are used to instant gratification for what we do.
We work a week and get paid a week's pay. We expect a home
business to work in a similar way. We reserve our best efforts
until we see the results, which is backwards. We expect too much
too soon, and we are disappointed when progress is too slow to
fit our expectations.

Launching home business may be compared to launching a
rocket; most of the effort is used just getting it off the
ground. This is why most people work for others and not for
themselves; they are not willing or able to invest the effort,
understanding and persistence to get a business off the ground.

If you want to grow a profitable home business you need to
venture beyond your comfort zone. You will need to learn new
skills. These skills will be valuable to whatever you do in the
future. This takes ongoing effort and a commitment to success.

As long as you believe you can be successful you can work
towards your prosperous future. As soon you allow doubt inside
you'll find plenty of reasons why you should quit.

A thought is a seed that reproduces fruit of its own kind.
Just as a watermelon seed cannot produce a corn plant, a seed of
doubt cannot produce success. To be successful you take each
challenge in stride learning from all your mistakes.

I don't believe there is any ONE system that can be
replicated that will achieve success for everyone, if there was
everyone would be doing it. There are many business systems that
can work. The key to successful Internet Marketing is to develop
a system that works with your existing and learned skills.

You won't learn a Home Business in a day, or a week, or a
month, but if you stick with it long enough and invest in your
skills you can be more successful than you have ever imagined.

Successful people make more mistakes than un-successful
people, yet they are successful because they make more decisions.

Don't look outside of yourself for your success. The keys
are already inside you, just like the potential of the oak tree
is in its seed. Once you find that seed use it to prime the pump
and you'll have more success over time than you would have
believed.

is information in one form or another. Information products
accounted for over 29% of all Internet sales this year, and it's
growing. Information products are almost 100% profit.

I have earned a good income selling information products,
and there is no good reason you couldn't do just as well in the
information business.

The key to selling information is to offer valuable hard to
find information within your special expertise at a reasonable
price. Millions of people are already searching the Internet for
your prospective information product.

Anyone can create, publish and market information products.
You can also use free information products to promote your
business driving thousands of visitors to your web site at little
or no cost.

The Advantages of e-Publishing

Compared to traditional hard copy publishing, the cost of
e-publishing is almost nothing! Electronic publications can be
updated as often as needed without accruing any out-of-pocket
costs. Sales are delivered on demand.
The advantages of electronic self-publishing include:

There are two common e-book creation formats being used to
produce and distribute electronic e-books.

1) Adobe Acrobat is a popular software program for creating
e-books. The Acrobat format is not my first choice for three
reasons:

To view you must download and install reader software.
Acrobat software to produce e-books is expensive
The learning curve for the Acrobat is difficult to master

2) HTML Compilers are software programs that use standard web
pages to produce e-books. Compiler software compresses normal web
pages into self-extracting executable file (.exe) Using standard
hyperlinks.

Compilers display your pages like you are used to viewing
with your Internet Explorer browser interface. PC users can
download and view e-books produced with any compiler software
program.

Overall the best HTML Compiler I tested at any price is the
"Active e-Book Compiler" It's also one of the cheapest at $29.

3) CD-ROMs allow you to combine audio, video and text formats
into information products. You can include up to 700 Megs of
information on a single CD, that's more than 60,000 pages. CDs
are great for large information packages that would require lots
of time to download or collections of information products, and
they sell well online.

I prefer the CD format best because everything is
self-contained and because downloading or dependence on the
Internet isn't required. On the downside CDs must be physically
shipped to your customers.

Getting Started

Ultimately in order to control your destiny, you want to
develop your own information product. Look to your unique
expertise for an untapped information market and develop a
product or package that addresses your target market.

Most information marketers start off selling other people's
information products. This is good because it helps you develop
marketing skills you'll need, and doesn't cost you much to get
started. You can become an affiliate, purchase resale rights or
purchase information products wholesale and sell retail.

Over time you can either develop your own information
package or you can purchase packages from others and market the
individual products online. Both strategies work. I sell
individual products, packages and CDs.

The information business is not a get rich quick type of
business. You need to be the number one source of the most
valuable and specific information for your market. In order to be
number one you must establish your reputation and expertise and
this takes time.

The key to selling information is in understanding and
reaching your market. In order for your products to sell people
must want your information.

I developed over 5,000 pages of free information in order to
establish my expertise in the marketing information business over
the last 7 years. This free content required thousands of hours
but delivers over 9,000 free visitors a day. Not the way to get
rich quick, but lots better than a job.

You can be as successful in your own area of expertise
probably in much less time. You can learn everything it's taken
me years to learn free on my website or one of my Marketing

Stretching Your Comfort Zone

It's about having a dream, then actualizing it in the real
world. It's easy to build a dream, but you must follow up with
action to turn it into reality.

Creation - A Two Part Task

To create anything in reality, we must first create it in
mind. We live in a physical world - we see and touch things. Yet,
reality exists first in mind. In order to ACHIEVE, first we must
CONCEIVE. Martin Luther King first said "I have a dream," then he
went out into the world to make his dream a reality.

Go Outside Of Your Comfort Zone

I used to be a long distance runner. A running friend of
mine, Steve Prefontane, set several long distance track records
over twenty years ago. Some of them have never been bettered.

I asked him for the secret of his success. I asked how he
seemed able to win almost every race he entered.

He told me he did not believe in talent - he believed in
commitment.

He said, "If you are not willing to go beyond yourself, you
will eventually stop yourself; you'll stop improving. The very
nature of a 'Personal Best' is going where you have never been
before." He went on with, "I win because I am want to win more
than anyone else, and I am willing to work harder than anyone
else in the race, I'll do whatever it takes."

Enlightenment Doesn't Care How We Get There

We need to be willing to go outside our personal comfort
zone in order to learn the things that are keeping us from
achieving success. We must be willing to do what we have never
done before to succeed. By definition, It's always uncomfortable
to go beyond the comfort zone.

Be Prepared To Be Uncomfortable

It is much easier to learn new things if we have prepared in
advance. Most people put off learning anything new at the point
where it starts to feel uncomfortable. The important work STARTS
as soon as it gets uncomfortable. That's where the REAL
accomplishment begins.

So prepare yourself to be uncomfortable. Start your learning
curve early in the day while you are still alert & fresh. Resign
yourself to the notion that you will not quit when the going gets
rough.

In distance running, the uncomfortable work is done gently -
pushing your personal limits a little at a time, day after day,
just a little bit at a time.

Challenging work takes a toll, and recovery is as important
as the work itself. Breakthroughs usually occur soon after we
take a step back to recover. When we step back, it's easier to
see things more clearly. God made the world is 7 days - the
seventh day in creation is the day of rest. The seventh day is
also the day of fulfillment.

Stretch the Limits

We are all capable of so much more than we think we are. But
if we are not willing to push ourselves outside our comfort zone,
we will never discover our ultimate capabilities.

When we desire to accomplish something is sufficiently
strong, we attract whatever we need for success. We must be
willing to travel a less comfortable path in order to achieve our
goals.

Getting Free Of The Nine-To-Five

Most of us still work at a job. Think about why you work for
someone else. The boss is the boss because he did his homework.
Some of the work was new and uncomfortable, but he did not let it
stop him. He pushed beyond his comfort zone. He made it, and so
can you.

His dream attracted the unique lessons he needed to learn.
Your boss had to be willing to be uncomfortable long enough to
push through. Most importantly, he did the bulk of the work
BEFORE he made a dime. In fact, he probably invested his life
savings in his business.

Develop a Franchise Mentality

Look at a typical franchise operation. People buy a
franchise to avoid repeating someone else's uncomfortable
groundwork. The franchise supplies a proven marketing system, and
you usually supply most or all of your life savings.

Most franchises succeed precisely because people invest so
much in them. They put themselves into a position where they
can't afford to fail. On the downside, you never totally own a
franchise. Usually the franchiser wants and deserves to keep part
of the action in the form of residual income.

Now It's Easier Than Ever

The Internet has made it much easier to turn a dream into
reality. Affiliate Programs work a lot like a franchise operation
but without the high cost.

Selling products produced by others is more comfortable
online. In most cases, you don't even have to buy the product to
sell it. In addition, most Affiliate Programs are free to join.

You can create your own affiliate program to sell your own
products. I'll have more to say about developing your own
affiliate program in a future article.

Start With Your Passion

We develop special expertise in areas in which we have a
strong personal interest. Information is the engine that
motivates the Internet. Developing your passion is the key to
success. Start with your passion and what you already know, and
then develop your own product.

When I started my on-line business in 1996, my theme was
'Free In Cyber-Space.' I indexed all the best free services and
resources required to get a web business started.

A few years ago you could grow a web business with little or
no up front costs. I no longer believe it is possible to create
something out of nothing. Now an Internet business is like any
other business, your success depends on skill development as well
as some real operating costs.

Many large Internet startups died when funding dried up in
the last few years. Many of these failures were primarily the
result to using off-line marketing strategies that simply don't
work on-line.

In the early days a small web businesses had a distinct
advantage because they could respond to changing conditions
almost overnight to incorporate new trends or marketing
strategies.

Internet businesses have been going through a period of
re-definition. Corporations and investment groups have been
forced to realize that it's impossible to sustain high "Burn
Rates" of capital; new businesses no longer have the luxury of
burning capital to be profitable sometime in the future.

More than 90% of the total income earned on-line is still
produced by less than 10% of all websites. This figure does not
include 100's of corporations spending millions offering
information and support without earning a profit. Having a lot of
money to spend doesn't even come close to assuring profitability.

Profitability Is Key

Today if you want to stay in business on-line, you MUST
operate a profitable business from DAY ONE.

The good news is that there are thousands of small and
home-based businesses all over the world earning outrageous
incomes. Some of these businesses are earning more in a month
than most 2-income families earn in a year. In fact, it IS still
realistic for the home-based business to earn a good income
on-line. Today it requires more planning and goal setting.

In the home-based business sector, two distinctly different
groups are emerging. They are the home hobby enthusiasts and full
time home-based businesses. It's still possible to migrate from
hobbyist to pro, but it's getting harder all the time.

Home Business Hobbyist

Well over 95% of all home businesses fit into this category.
It requires most folks at least a year of skill development to
progress through this stage. It took me longer because when I
started I had to figure almost everything on my own. I learned
through trial and error, mostly error. Now much more information
is available.

Today there are millions of people on the Internet, trying
to sell something. The problem is, everyone is trying to sell the
same things but few are buying.

The home business hobbyist's website is easy to recognize.
It usually consists of tons of slow loading banners and
animations touting all kinds of unrelated stuff for sale. Very
often, there is little or no content employed to attract targeted
traffic to the website. Without a clearly defined mission to
begin with, they are doomed to failure.

The hobbyist's position is simply immature marketing
strategy. Long term, the best way to control almost anything is
to learn how to do it yourself. In real estate, it's called
sweat-equity. We all learn from doing and especially from our own
mistakes.

During the early stages, it is not advisable to spend a ton
of money in advertising or paid promotion. Take this time to
learn skills and develop your market niche. After you are able to
communicate your concise mission statement, you are ready to
consider paying for outside promotional services.

If you are still at the hobbyist level, it can feel like you
are on a treadmill going nowhere. The solution is to find a
market you can reach, and then an in-demand product your market
wants. This is the key to success and nearly everyone overlooks
it. Develop and test your own winning marketing strategy, and
then work it.

There are many good marketing courses ranging from under $20
to over $200. Not every good marketing strategy will work well
for YOU so I advise anyone serious about making the transition to
consider purchasing several marketing courses, especially during
the first year.

It's no longer probable that you will grow a successful
Internet business without specific marketing skills. Invest your
time and money in education and skill development during that
first year.

The Full Time Internet Marketing Pro

An interesting thing happens once you start to earn money
on-line. You start earning increasingly more all the time.

Just as the Space Shuttle burns 90% of its fuel load in
getting off the ground, the average home-based business requires
most of the planning and work before it earns a dime. This can be
compared to the work that writers and actors do; they create a
product using material already in their minds, and get paid
according to its acceptance in the market place. If the money
comes at all it comes later, sometimes much later.

Most successful people still fail more than they succeed,
yet in the end success is for those who don't give up. Failure,
on the other hand is reserved only for quitters.

After you discover marketing strategy that works for your
business, everything seems to flow in your direction. It usually
takes only a short time to progress from earning a few hundred
dollars a month to earning thousands. This all happens AFTER you
discover and develop your unique marketing strategy.

Many successful Internet business owners earning a good
income on-line find they have two great businesses. The first
business is marketing the niche products and services identified
at the beginning, and the second is selling the information that
helped them get to where they are now.

Paid advertising and promotion is much less risky when you
are making money regularly. The reason is simple; it is harder to
lose money after you understand what works. Advertising strategy
is simple; it pays as long as you earn more in profit than it
costs.

When you are making money, you can justify taking more
chances and testing new promotional ideas. At this stage, you can
afford to spend more because advertising no longer costs - it
pays.

Making the Transition

The transition from hobbyist to marketing professional is
difficult. Most people don't have enough desire to put in the
effort required. Success on-line is not easier than a brick and
mortar business, but it can be a lot more profitable.

The good news is that on-line businesses may be successful
with a fraction of the money required to start and run a
conventional business. Moreover, you can start and grow your
business at your own pace.

The keys to your success go back to our beginning where you
defined your niche and your mission.

It's also possible to build your business MENTALLY, then
move that virtual business to the Internet and become an almost
instant success. But this can happen only if you have a great
concept, a well thought out and thoroughly tested marketing plan,
and you follow it.

A Basic Outline For Your Transition.

- Define your niche and create your mission statement
- Know exactly how you will reach your targeted market
- Research your proposed business, including your
competition
- Obtain and follow good marketing information
- Register your domain name
- Build your web website using professional services where
required
- Set up your follow-up messaging system
- Sell products and services repeatedly to the same
customers
- Revise your approach. Repeat the process
- Automate the process
- Restart the entire process with a new product or service.

If you are sufficiently disciplined, willing to develop the
skills required, hang in long enough, and have a little bit of
luck, it's still possible to develop a full-time living income
on-line in a year or less.

Looking Ahead

After a serious back injury in February of 1996 I started
working full time on-line. I was in a position where if I didn't
sell anything my family wouldn't eat. Needless to say that was
the wrong way to start out.

I got even more serious when my doctor said I would never be
able to return to my trade as a Color Lithographer for the
Printing Industry.

Early on I realized that earning a living full time on the
Internet wasn't going to be nearly as easy as I originally
thought it would.

Serving My Apprenticeship

It took me four years to become a journeyman in the printing
trade and another five years to become a master lithographer.
When I started working from home I used up my life savings in the
first year. My apprenticeship went faster on the Internet; it
only took 2 years to earn an income online.

Starting a business is different than a working a job,
because there is no guarantee you will earn anything at all. Most
people quit before they get even their business off the ground.
Starting a business reminds me of when they launch a rocket into
space; most of the fuel is burned up just getting it off the
ground, after its launched it takes less and less effort to grow.

I was living off of savings I didn't have an infinite amount
of time. I figured I would home school myself on Internet
Marketing. I learned what the most successful people were doing
and condensed four years work into two years.

I started out with Corey Rudl's Marketing course "The Insider's
Secrets to Marketing Your Business on the Internet". I purchased
many others since, but that one was the most useful overall
because it covers almost every possible technique and strategy.

My business plan was to find the best available information
and share everything I learned with others on my website and in
this newsletter. When I started, I made the decision not to
pretend I was an expert. Even in 1996 there were already too many
self-proclaimed experts. This sharing of information has helped
me to solidify and use what I have learned.

It's been almost nine years now. I have developed over 200
websites with over 6,000 pages of content. I have attracted over
2,000,000 (2 million) visitors to my websites (this year alone)
spending less than $100 dollars on advertising. I guess that
qualifies me as some kind of expert.

There is a lot to learn if you want to take full control of
your business. No-one learns it all over night. What follows is a

What's next?

When I was a kid my dad told me there are two kinds of kids…
"Fort Builders" and "Fort Maintainers;" I realized that I am the
latter type. I like to build things from the ground up, and then
move on to the next project.

What I enjoy most is helping others one on one, and that's
exactly where I am going to focus my efforts into the future.
This year I am making myself available for one on one consulting,
with a bit of mentoring thrown in for good measure.

I am also going to help people get their websites up and
running in a way I believe they will have the best chance of
success. I won't be able to help everyone or do everything for
anyone, and I doubt that I can make anyone rich in a few weeks. I
can help you avoid most of the money pits, and make better
choices saving both time and energy. In short, I am the
marketing expert I wish I would have had while I was learning.

self-directed, has staying power, desire, and a history at being

As a marketer, developing a membership product is one of the
most profitable products you can sell. You earn residual income
every month, selling the same product over and over again.

Membership products are attractive to affiliates because of
their residual income possibilities; it's easy to get others to
help selling memberships. Membership products pay well because
they are so profitable to begin with.

Big corporations sell memberships now with many of the
products we buy. Popular examples are getting a free cell phone
to subscribe to a cell phone service. Digital television
recorders will not work without subscribing to a program listing
service with a monthly fee.

The only downside is that it's really hard to create a good
membership product that will sell, and one that people will see
the value continuing to pay membership fees.

Most On-Line Membership Products Fail

The key to developing a successful membership product is to
develop a highly targeted product with exclusive benefits that
non-members cannot find elsewhere.

Pricing a membership correctly is as critical to success as
the product itself. One common mistake is to price the cost to
join too low while the cost to continue membership is priced too
high to justify the value received by remaining a member.

There are several marketing models that make sense.

Offer a higher up front membership fee in exchange for
access to a more valuable product. Offer a free product in
exchange for a membership contract. Offer quarterly or yearly
membership options. Consider discounts for longer term membership
commitment. Offer loyalty discounts for long term members. The
list of possibilities is limitless.

You can offer a low or zero membership fee to join with a
monthly fee for a service of some kind.

Satisfied customers make the best sales team. You can offer
an exclusive member's only affiliate program to help members pay
for their own membership.

However you set it up it's critical to have a failsafe plan
to keep members satisfied. Always offer a full satisfaction
guarantee.

I invest in membership products carefully, and only after
careful investigation. I insist on good documentation and
availability of support and some sort of guarantee. Personally I
rarely purchase a membership unless it has the capacity to pay
for itself. I only buy memberships with affiliate programs and I
only sell memberships which I have joined myself.

The following are examples of what I consider excellent
membership product examples. I will explain what I think the
creators did that are responsible for their success. You don't
have to be interested in buying a membership to study the
following sales models.

E-Book Wholesaler

This is a membership product created by Tom Hue the creator
of the first and still the best selling e-book package "Free to
Sell".

I have been a member since May 2001, and would never even
consider giving up my membership. Why? If I canceled I would lose
my right to continue to sell the titles, and they earn me a LOT
more income and traffic than they the monthly cost. I lost money
during the first few months; but today it's become an important
income source. I sell individual e-book products from my website
every day.

One good search engine listing can be more valuable than a
costly advertising program. I developed a page linking to the
individual e-books on my main page of my website. Over time I
achieved a ton of top ten search engine listings in several niche
markets with the individual product websites, every one leading

This is a brand new concept in a membership product. The
health and fitness niche is huge on-line. This product supplies
fresh content every month that members can use to develop their
own info-products. Sales letters are included. The topics are all
related to health. Any single info-product can deliver a lot of
income over time.

They don't specialize in finished e-books. Bryan hires free
lance writers with specific expertise to write the health related
info-products his research has determined will sell on-line.
Members convert the polished content into their own info-products
to sell exclusively, some have master resale rights. Members can
add their own branding and links as they see fit. Members get two
new info-products every month. New Members start with the

that pays $17 a month commission. There are many compelling
reasons I like this concept. I like having the ability to develop
and market products that no-one else can, and I like being able
to sell memberships to more than cover the cost of my own

This is a membership product based on delivering an on-line
service. Simon Grabowski has developed the most advanced
programmable autoresponder on the market today. His

after you acquire a prospect you are able to follow up multiple
times with a series of short messages about your product until

When considering any membership product, choosing the right
product and the pricing are critical. The product must pay for

Before you embark in creating your own membership product,
do your homework thoroughly. Study and purchase other
memberships, and learn what features to incorporate into your own
product. Membership products are a lot of work to create and
market. Often the most successful membership products are Joint

of the box. Consider all your sales options. Your offer must be
compelling and your reputation strong or it won't sell.

Is It Safe To Use Your Credit Card On-Line?

The simple answer is YES! It is not only safe, using your
credit card is the safest and only way you should buy anything
on-line. It's actually safer to buy on-line with your credit card
than to use your credit card almost anywhere else.

More than ninety percent of all sales on the Internet are
processed using credit cards.

Internet credit card fraud today is big; it costs merchants
and credit card companies billions each year. As a consumer,
using your credit card on-line offers you special protections not
available with any other payment method.

Who Pays for Your Protection?

When you buy using a credit card, merchants pay a percentage
of their total transaction to the merchant's account provider.
Typical discount rates range from 2.5% to 5%, depending the type
of business and other factors. Some of the funds and a
per-transaction fee are used to pay for your protection, but it's
the merchant that pay for credit card fraud, not the customer.

When you use a check or a fake credit card or debit card
that draws funds from your checking account these protections
don't apply. Always use a real credit card and not a debit card
on-line.

Credit card companies are on the side of the consumer, they
want you to use your credit card because they earn a percentage
of every sale from the merchant. Fraud costs are mostly charged
to the merchant.

1) If you are a victim of any kind of fraud you can have the
charge removed.
2) If your product is not delivered you can have the charge
removed.
3) If the quality wasn't as represented, you can have the
charge removed.
4) In most cases if you just want a refund for any reason you
can get it without any hassles if you buy with your
credit card.
5) If you have trouble getting a refund for any reason you
can dispute the purchase with your credit card company
and have the charge removed.

Buying Off-line

When you buy off-line at a restaurant, mall or department
store, your purchase is actually much less secured than it is
on-line.

Off-line there is a paper trail where many people have
potential access to your information. Anyone anywhere along the
way can get access to your credit card information or even to
your entire identity.

Retail transactions are verified via telephone lines where
hackers can get access to your information. Always ask to get
your carbon returned every time your card is swiped so your
information is not left available to the staff or end up in the
garbage where identify thieves find it for identity theft.

Your personal information is only as safe as the computer
system where your account information is stored. Most retail
stores today use wireless computer networks to store your
information. Wireless computer hackers compromise hundreds of
thousands of accounts on a regular basis selling account
information to crooks.

Retailers may keep your information on file for future sales
without your permission, where anyone with access can compromise
it. In addition, many merchants will sell your personal
information without your permission to third parties.

Buying On-Line

When you purchase on-line, things are almost always much
more secure.

Assuming you only enter your credit card information on
secure servers your information is encrypted. A secure server
URL address starts with the prefix https not the normal http that
non-secure pages use the added "s" stands for secure. Your
browser should also show a locked padlock in the status bar if
you are on a secure server.

Your information is encrypted using 64 bit encryption
technology. This encryption is 100% safe and no-one has figured
out how to break it. In almost all cases your merchant doesn't
have access to your credit card number or card verification
number. They will have access to your name, address, phone
number, and authorization number for your purchase, just in case
they need to contact you about the sale or generate a credit or
refund later.

The Electronic Sales Process

1) Your encrypted credit card information goes directly to a
third party transaction payment gateway server where it remains
encrypted from human eyes. When you use your credit card, you
submit an electronic request to a third party processing network
for "authorization to capture funds" from your credit card
account in the amount of the purchase.

2) The processing network receives your electronic request in
real time. It determines if your account is valid and if the
funds are available. If they are, the processing network returns
an electronic response code. This response is called an
"authorization code"; it is the guaranteed authorization required
to capture the funds. Typically, this code is a six-digit number.
The transaction and its associated authorization are stored in a
"batch", where other transactions for that day reside. Only the
merchant and the processor have access to the authorization code
and the transaction number for the sale but neither will have
access to your credit card number.

3) The merchant's transaction gateway server sends you and the
merchant a transaction receipt via email. As far as you are
concerned, the transaction is complete. One more step required
for the merchant to complete the transaction.

4) At the end of the business day (usually), a final request is
submitted to the processing network to go ahead and "capture the
funds" that you obtained authorizations for during the course of
business that day. This is called "settlement". Any charge can
be voided before settlement occurs. This gives a merchant a
second chance to examine all transactions to see if everything
looks OK. This step is important because the merchant is
ultimately responsible for any fraudulent sales.

5) Within 48 to 72 hours (usually), the funds associated with the
batch are deposited electronically into the merchant's business
bank account. Typically, the discount rate your merchant pays are
deducted from the deposit before it transferred to the merchant's
bank account.

Real Time Credit Card Processing

If you intend to sell anything on-line you must be able to
accept credit cards; credit cards are the currency of the
Internet. Secure real time credit card processing removes the
barriers that might prevent you from doing business on the net.

A real time credit card processing system is a transaction
processing system that functions as a payment service using a
secure transaction server on the Internet. Merchants with a
merchant account can use the system to submit, authorize,
capture, and settle credit card or eCheck transactions on-line
without the need for a separate transaction terminal, device or

How to Avoid Problems

Most Internet merchants are honest and deliver exactly what
you pay for. If they didn't they would lose their merchant
account. Your credit card company protects you from on-line
fraud. If you have a problem with a merchant you can't resolve on
your own, call the number on the back of your credit card to get
help or to dispute the sale.

The number one way your personal information is compromised
on-line is when you give it to someone who shouldn't have it in
the first place. Almost 100% of fraud can be avoided simply by
not buying from strangers via email. NEVER buy anything from
spammers, NEVER, no matter how good the deal seems.

The porn industry is another way people get taken. They
often collect credit card info in order to sell it to fraudsters.

A deal that sounds too good to be true or appeals to greed
are another way scammers get access your credit card information.
When someone tells you to keep their offer in confidence, assume
there is a reason. You should know you can't buy legitimate
products for 10% to 20% of the normal price.

Just use common sense. You haven't been specially selected
for anything. You haven't won $1,000,000 in a contest you don't
even remember entering, and no-one is going to send you millions
of dollars to help them get their money out of Nigeria or some
other country.

A legitimate business will never ask you to provide your
personal information via non-secure email.

Scammers often print one link on the email but when you
click, it may redirect you to another one. Any time you log onto
any site to provide personal credit card or banking information
type the secure URL address into your browser. Look at the
address you entered, if you are not 100% sure call the company
directly to confirm. At least validate the owner of the domain
in question using a DNS search tool like the following

Don't be afraid of buying on-line, it's still the safest way
to buy anything, and it's usually cheaper than buying anywhere
else. Even with the cost of shipping, often you can buy cheaper
and safer on-line, even from the biggest retailers without even
leaving home.
