A Basic Strategy for Free Traffic

Every day I get email from people who already have a website
but aren't selling enough. They want to know what to do get more
buyers to their website.

One top ten listing in a single major search engine can give
you more free traffic than a costly keyword advertising program,
but it requires a little planning. If you are just getting
started or starting over, now is the time to develop your basic
traffic strategy. There are a few basics almost every website
should incorporate in order to get free traffic from the search
engines.

I would recommend that you adapt a long term approach to
getting free traffic. Get started doing the things you can do for
yourself free and if you don't know how to do something take the
time now to learn how to do it on your own.

Establish Your Business Internet Identity

The very first thing you do should do is invest in your own
domain name. If you don't start here you will be forced to redo
all your website promotional work every time you change web
hosting provider. A domain name will give your website an
address that won't change; this is a must if you are serious
about doing business on-line.

There are several good low cost companies that can register
your domain name. I use GoDaddy.com. The cost is less than ten
dollars a year and it's simply a must.

Most hosting companies can register your domain name as part
of their startup service. When registering your domain name, your
hosting company will appear as your technical and/or
administrative contact. Make sure that your domain is registered
to YOU and not to the hosting company. This is important, because
you don't want your domain name owned or held hostage later on by
your hosting company or ISP.


Find a Good Hosting Service

Don't make the same mistake I made when choosing a hosting
company. Free and low cost hosting companies are great for your
personal web pages but not for business. The following URL will

companies later can amount to much more work than you expect so
in short, start out with a full service hosting service you can
stay with.

I am very happy with my provider even though they are a little
bit higher priced than the budget hosts. It's best to invest in
a host that will answer your questions because you will need more
support in the beginning.

Develop a Professional Website

If you don't already have a professional looking website I
would advise you to have your initial website designed
professionally. If funds are low consider spending a week
learning the basics of HTML and starting with a professional
pre-designed template.

There are many issues involved in developing your first
website. If you develop the content ahead of time it's possible
to purchase a custom website template without spending a lot of
money.

It costs a lot to have your webpage copy written
professionally so invest the time learning how to write it
yourself or have it written or edited professionally before you
even start to design your website. Plan what you want to
communicate on each page and how many pages you will need.
Prepare as much of the content as possible yourself.

From the start, plan it so each important page of your
website will appear to the search engines as an entire website,
and you want your visitors to have access to all your important
pages from each of your main pages. This strategy gives you more
front doors to attract visitors via the search engines.

Do You Have Meta Tags on Your Pages

Develop Meta Tags even before you develop your website, it's
that important because the Meta Tags are the only information
your potential visitors will see in the search results when they
are searching for your site

Meta Tags consist of code that is read and indexed by the
major search engines. Most web page design software doesn't
generate the code automatically for you, and most don't explain
the concept very well in their documentation.

You can save a lot of money here because this in essence
what the Internet Insiders do when they offer to sell you a top
listing.

Pay special attention to the selection of keyword phrases.
You should actually test your keywords in the biggest search
engines first. When you visit the top sites listed, select "VIEW
PAGE SOURCE" from your browser, you can see the actual Meta Tags
and keywords that resulted in the top placements. It's worth
the time to optimize your Meta Tags for each of the biggest
search engines in this manner. Write and optimize Meta Tags for
each of your important pages.

Nouns often make the best keywords. It is unlikely you will
be found using general keywords like business, or software.
Instead develop your keyword list using keyword phrases; they are
more specific and therefore more powerful. Stay away from
keywords that are too general like "free", or "software", if you
are offering free software on your website use "free software" in
combination for a higher ranking.

If you don't bother to prepare Meta Tags for your pages the
search engines will index the first words found, this usually
isn't the best choice.


Submit Your Site to the Search Engines

Don't waste your money on "pay for submission" services
promising top listings. Most can't deliver. If you can learn how
to write Meta Tags you can do fine on your own.

Before you actually submit your site to the search engines,
learn the basics of how search engines rank your pages in the

Make sure that the each page's content is designed to stand
on its own, as if it was a complete website. Once you have the
basic submission work finished, explore the directories that
specialize in niche sites like your own. Because of the large

of the basic work is required up front before you make any sales,
