Membership Products

As a marketer, developing a membership product is one of the
most profitable products you can sell. You earn residual income
every month, selling the same product over and over again.
Membership products are attractive to affiliates because of
their residual income possibilities; it's easy to get others to
help selling memberships. Membership products pay well because
they are so profitable to begin with.
Big corporations sell memberships now with many of the
products we buy. Popular examples are getting a free cell phone
to subscribe to a cell phone service. Digital television
recorders will not work without subscribing to a program listing
service with a monthly fee.
The only downside is that it's really hard to create a good
membership product that will sell, and one that people will see
the value continuing to pay membership fees.
Most On-Line Membership Products Fail
The key to developing a successful membership product is to
develop a highly targeted product with exclusive benefits that
non-members cannot find elsewhere.
Pricing a membership correctly is as critical to success as
the product itself. One common mistake is to price the cost to
join too low while the cost to continue membership is priced too
high to justify the value received by remaining a member.
There are several marketing models that make sense.
Offer a higher up front membership fee in exchange for
access to a more valuable product. Offer a free product in
exchange for a membership contract. Offer quarterly or yearly
membership options. Consider discounts for longer term membership
commitment. Offer loyalty discounts for long term members. The
list of possibilities is limitless.
You can offer a low or zero membership fee to join with a
monthly fee for a service of some kind.
Satisfied customers make the best sales team. You can offer
an exclusive member's only affiliate program to help members pay
for their own membership.
However you set it up it's critical to have a failsafe plan
to keep members satisfied. Always offer a full satisfaction
guarantee.
I invest in membership products carefully, and only after
careful investigation. I insist on good documentation and
availability of support and some sort of guarantee. Personally I
rarely purchase a membership unless it has the capacity to pay
for itself. I only buy memberships with affiliate programs and I
only sell memberships which I have joined myself.
The following are examples of what I consider excellent
membership product examples. I will explain what I think the
creators did that are responsible for their success. You don't
have to be interested in buying a membership to study the
following sales models.
E-Book Wholesaler
This is a membership product created by Tom Hue the creator
of the first and still the best selling e-book package "Free to
Sell".

The e-bookwholesaler membership currently comes with 90
exclusive niche e-books. Each comes with resale rights, sales
websites, and the ability to brand the e-books with your own
affiliate product links. The cost to join is $47.00. Monthly
fees are $27.00 thereafter. The $47.00 delivers over $1,000.00
in value and the monthly fee allows members to resell the e-books
keeping every cent.
Members have rights to sell the e-books and to become
affiliates. The e-books are chosen carefully for several niche
markets. Many of the biggest names in Internet marketing are
members. The additional income from affiliate link branding in
every product also comes ads value to the membership.
I have been a member since May 2001, and would never even
consider giving up my membership. Why? If I canceled I would lose
my right to continue to sell the titles, and they earn me a LOT
more income and traffic than they the monthly cost. I lost money
during the first few months; but today it's become an important
income source. I sell individual e-book products from my website
every day.

One good search engine listing can be more valuable than a
costly advertising program. I developed a page linking to the
individual e-books on my main page of my website. Over time I
achieved a ton of top ten search engine listings in several niche
markets with the individual product websites, every one leading
to my main website.

Push-Button Health
This is a brand new concept in a membership product. The
health and fitness niche is huge on-line. This product supplies
fresh content every month that members can use to develop their
own info-products. Sales letters are included. The topics are all
related to health. Any single info-product can deliver a lot of
income over time.
They don't specialize in finished e-books. Bryan hires free
lance writers with specific expertise to write the health related
info-products his research has determined will sell on-line.
Members convert the polished content into their own info-products
to sell exclusively, some have master resale rights. Members can
add their own branding and links as they see fit. Members get two
new info-products every month. New Members start with the
following titles as of December 2004.
1) "Low-Carb Dieting Secrets.
2) "Hair Loss Prevention
3) "Back Pain Relief
4) "Conquering Obesity.
5) "Arthritis Relief.
6) "Finding the Perfect Diet for You
In addition, Bryan offers free webmaster training resources
and a ton of free tools including templates. He offers special
deals on services, and includes several ready to sell health
related info-products as bonuses.
I joined as soon as I found this product and locked in the
introductory $29.97 membership fee. The fees will go up as more
products are added. They offer a member's only affiliate program
that pays $17 a month commission. There are many compelling
reasons I like this concept. I like having the ability to develop
and market products that no-one else can, and I like being able
to sell memberships to more than cover the cost of my own
membership.

Get Response Autoresponders
This is a membership product based on delivering an on-line
service. Simon Grabowski has developed the most advanced
programmable autoresponder on the market today. His
autoresponders fully conform to the can spam act with optional
features like double opt-in. The customer support has been great.
The beauty of using programmable autoresponders is that
after you acquire a prospect you are able to follow up multiple
times with a series of short messages about your product until
the timing is right for the sale. Sales are often 200% to 400%
higher when autoresponders are used in any marketing program.
Simon offers a free sponsored version of his autoresponder
service as a marketing tool so anyone can try scaled down version
of his service. This is a brilliant sales concept because
autoresponders work. Most of the people that try the free
version eventually find they can't do without it. They realize
that it will more than pay for the cost of the more powerful Pro
Version.
As an affiliate program it is great because hardly anyone
stops using programmable autoresponders after they see what it
does to boost sales.

Summing Up
Membership products are a profitable way to develop residual
income whether you are offering a membership product as your own
or as an affiliate.
When considering any membership product, choosing the right
product and the pricing are critical. The product must pay for
itself over time in order to retain members. A satisfaction
guarantee always helps memberships sell.
Before you embark in creating your own membership product,
do your homework thoroughly. Study and purchase other
memberships, and learn what features to incorporate into your own
product. Membership products are a lot of work to create and
market. Often the most successful membership products are Joint
Ventures.
Consider a membership product a long term project. Think out
of the box. Consider all your sales options. Your offer must be
compelling and your reputation strong or it won't sell.
Almost any product or service can be delivered as a
membership but only a few products or services are suitable for
maintaining paying members over time.
